I started making regular progress, and I defended in the summer of 2021. This also worked during the pandemic as we assembled over Zoom. So, I discovered that writing groups were my community of choice, but I also got a lot out of the larger dissertation retreats as well. Suddenly, I was no longer alone in a shame spiral. I realized that my peers were just as busy and their drafts also felt “out-of-control” to them, but they were sending them to their advisors and getting feedback. I would wake up in the middle of the night with the anxious thought, “What if I never finish?” A turning point occurred when I gathered a small group of similarly busy, isolated and anxious fellow dissertators in my program, and we started to meet weekly, mostly writing together, but breaking occasionally to work through a common dilemma, commiserate or even celebrate. Periodically, in a panic, I would embark on an energetic bout of binge writing and often got stuck in near-obsessive loops of writing and rewriting a chapter, reluctant to send the out-of-control draft out for feedback. I fell into periods of complete inactivity, blaming the workload of my profession or the responsibilities of family life.
